• I attended  a meeting on 11th July where   residents of Springfield and neighbouring wards held the ODA to account about the plans to  restore Leyton Marsh following the removal of  the  temporary basket ball court practice courts.
• Save Leyton Marsh is Campaigning to restore of the land of Leyton Marsh to a completely open access, uncommercialised and unspoilt green field, by 15^th October 2012.
•  They  are campaigning for all relevant authorities to sign up to a joint legally-binding agreement to restore Leyton Marsh by October 15th to its character as a plain and simple green open access space.

Successful first meeting of the New Springfield Ward Forum


Residents and Councillors discussed how to improve our ward at the last nights first meeting of the Springfield Ward Forum.

There was a lot of interest in developing a community plan for the development of the dis-used toilets on Upper Clapton Road . It is anticipated that the forum will meet again in September to discuss this matter with Planners.

Residents also  raised concerns about Parking, Traffic Calming &Dog Control Orders .

  Springfield Ward Forum 2nd July Webb Estate Community Hall 7-8pm

 

 

I am pleased to announce that the first meeting of a new Springfield Ward Forum will take place on Monday 2nd July from 7 - 8pm at the Webb Estate  Community Hall off Upper Clapton Road .

The purpose of the forum is to improve collaboration between local Councillors and residents. It is an opportunity for us to work together to design and deliver ways of improving the local area.  

The Springfield  Ward Forum will not be a typical Council meeting and does not seek to duplicate any of the existing work we do to address individual problems and casework issues. Instead we think its an exciting opportunity to bring people together to make a positive difference to the ward.

We hope you can come along on 2nd  July, meet your neighbours and share your ideas for the things you would like to work together to achieve in the local area. 

To prompt your thinking we thought that we would share some of our initial ideas for what the Springfield Ward Forum could do: 

•  Mapping our Ward - How much do we know about our ward? Where  are the significant places and organisations? There will be a large map of Springfield at the meeting so we can share local knowledge.
• Developing Springfield - How should Springfield develop in the future? How do we balance housing needs and the environment? How can community organisations work together?  How can we work together to improve local buildings such as the disused toilets on Clapton Common.
• Olympics and Legacy - How will the forthcoming Olympics affect us in Springfield? What will be the legacy? Do we want to develop a sport for social change movement like the one in Stoke Newington.
• Telling Local Stories – there is a wealth of information available about the history of the local area. However, we are not aware of anything that necessarily tells the stories of the people and families that have lived here. The forum could establish a local network to do this by bringing people to together, to talk and share their stories. These could then be shared more widely - online, for example. 
• Local Photography – similar to the idea above, the forum could encourage people could share photographs of the local area over the years. People could bring photos to meetings, share them with others, and tell the stories related to them. Over time we could build up a visual representation of how the area has changed, which could be shared more widely. 
• Skills Trading – there is a huge range of expertise in the local area. Based on Trade School London (http://www.tradeschool.coop/london/class) the forum could encourage people to share these skills with others. People could offer to teach a class (at a forum meeting) on something they have specific expertise (it could be photography, art, growing food, music, stone carving , anything, really). This would be done for free in exchange for somebody else offering to do the same thing, and so on and so forth. 

These are only ideas. They are intended to demonstrate that there is significant potential for the different types of things we could do through the forum. 

Importantly the work of the forum will be guided by you, so please do come along on 2ndJuly and get involved.

Radio 1 Big Weekend in Hackney 23/24 June

BBC Radio 1 is holding its Hackney Big Weekend on Hackney Marshes on the 23/24 June.
Headline acts will include Leona Lewis, Jack White, D'banj, Jessie J, Will.I.Am, Florence and the Machine, Tinie Tempah and Plan B.50% of tickets for this event will be allocated to Hackney residents.
Hackney Big Weekend will be a great opportunity for the borough. There will be workshops at the Radio 1 Academy in Hackney, open DJ sessions, visits from top artists and DJs and 20% of food concessions within the site will go to Hackney businesses.
Attendance is free for the event but a booking fee of £2.50 will be charged.
There is a two-step procedure for ticket allocation - registration is NOW OPEN.
Applicants must be over 16 years of age by 23 June 2012 and must first register their details online including uploading a recent photo.Once registered, applicants can then apply for tickets by phone or online starting on the 25th March.

Springfield Safer Neighbourhood Team Priorities

Springfields Community Action Panel has set the current policing priorities.

North East Neighbourhood Committee Meeting 31st October Webb Estate 7.00pm

The next Meeting of the North East Neighbourhood Committee will be Monday 31st October 2011 in the Webb Estate Tenants Hall from 7.00pm.
This is your chance to question all your councillors from the North East Wards (Cazenove, Hackney Downs, Leabridge, New River and Springfield).
This is the first time the committee has met since the summer and the agenda includes a report on the civil unrest of the summer and a report on the new transport plan. Hackney Mayor Jules Pipe will also be present to answer questions from residents.

After the Riots Where do we go now? Public Meeting on 21st September

In a packed room in Stamford Hill Library on 21st September local residents discussed the causes and consequences of the August Riots with a panel of speakers including Diane Abbott MP, Cllr Ian Rathbone, Fr Rob Wickham from St Johns Church Hackney and local lawyer Sarah McSherry .

The meeting had been organised by Springfield , Cazenove and New River Branch Labour Parties and was chaired by Martin Dockrell the Chair of Springfield Labour Party.

The panel and audience discussed the myriad and complex causes of the riots and the positive response the next day by the local community who were quick to organise events such as the Clean-up Campaign and Clarence Road Tea Party .

The North-East Neighbourhood Committee will discuss the riots in more detail at the next Meeting on 31st October.

I will be taking part in an examination of issues surrounding the riots as part of the work programme of the Community Safety and Social Inclusion Scrutiny Commission.

Some Facts about the riots are summarised below.

Incidents in Hackney

· 6th/7th August - Saturday night/Sunday morning: As noted above, the first incidents in Hackney took place in Dalston; there were a few incidents of theft/looting and attempted theft, with some damage to 5 chain stores in and around Kingsland Shopping Centre. 12 arrests were made.
· Monday 8th August: The main disturbances in Hackney took place on Monday, 8th August. They were focussed in Hackney Central and Hackney Downs. No buildings were burnt, although around 16 shops and businesses (8 locally owned) were broken into or suffered direct damage, and around 24 cars were torched. A single decker bus was also attacked and set on fire in Shacklewell Lane. Further arrests were made (52 in total, over the two days).
· Tuesday 9th August: There were no disturbances, bar one burglary.

The police are still assessing extensive CCTV footage of the disturbances, which will provide a fuller picture of the number and scale of incidents around the borough.

Overview of arrests (as at 6th September)

Over 2,000 arrests have now been made in connection with the disturbances across London, and over 1,100 people have been charged. Approximately 25% of the arrests and charges have been for juveniles, and 75% for adults.

In Hackney, 167 people have been arrested for offences in the borough since 8th August Of that total, 41 were bailed for further enquires, 112 were charged, and no further actions were taken on 14 (although some have since been re-arrested with CCTV evidence).

The age breakdown of the 167 arrests is as follows:
Under 18: 33
18-25 yrs old: 90
Over 25: 37
7 need clarification on DOB

Proposed Changes to the Parliamentary Constituency of Hackney North

The Boundary Commission has published proposals for re-drawing the boundaries of the Parliamentary Constituencies . These will affect the boundaries of our constituency of Hackney North.

It is proposed the current constituency of Hackney North and Stoke Newington will loose three wards namely Clissold, Stoke Newington Central and Dalston and will gain Kings Park, Chatham and Wick from Hackney South and Seven Sisters from Tottenham.

Hackney's secondary schools continue to show an astonishing level of improvement.
This year’s GCSE results for Hackney school students are the best ever and for the first time ever students have achieved results above the national average .
Seventy-five per cent of students secured five good GCSEs, a rise of over 4% on last year.
A total of 58% of Hackney students achieved five good GCSEs which included English and Maths – a rise of almost 3% on last year. This places the borough above both last year’s national and Inner London averages.
Although the final figures have not yet been published it is expected that Key Stage results will show a similar level of improvement

The Health and Wellbeing Profile provides a 'big picture' of local needs, ranging from the social and environmental conditions which shape health and wellbeing through to the specific illnesses and conditions that local people suffer from. The profile is used to improve the way the Council and the NHS commission and deliver services for local people.
